Quorn Soup Review

We've sampled the new Quorn Soups with vegan pieces over the last week. I'd heard about these but hadn't spotted them anywhere but when they cropped up in Heron Foods for 89p I grabbed a tub of each. Thankfully ours were not from the dodgy batch that accidentally had the non-vegan pieces added but if you've bought some recently check that it isn't dated October 14 or 16. It's a long, long time since I've had Quorn. Funnily enough I was probably one of the first people in the world to sample it. Quorn has been available on the retail market since 1993 but when I worked as a cashier and food server in British Home Stores cafes in Chester and Newcastle (1989-90) we had a couple of vegetarian dishes that included this new myco-protein that was yes, you've guessed it - Quorn! BHS, probably one of the last places you'd expect to be ground breaking with regards to veggie food but there you go!

So, onto the soups. I have to admit I love making soups and don't often buy ready made and to be honest my hopes for these weren't that high but I was very pleasantly surprised. There's a Moroccan soup and a Red Thai Soup. Both are nicely flavoured but not over the top heat wise. There are really generous amounts of Quorn pieces and lentils (Moroccan) and rice noodles (Red Thai). Often with tins of soup where it says 2 servings I eat the whole thing but these did give 2 decent sized servings. They do come in plastic containers but they do say they are recyclable and I've actually saved them to put homemade soups in for the freezer. I'm not about to give up making my own soup but I would buy these again. We've also got hold of some of the Quorn fillets so I'll be digging out my old pan fried chicken book for ideas on how to cook those. First the new Linda McCartney range and now Quorn starting a vegan range, change is definitely in the air! I can imagine that all these products will be especially great for people starting to experiment with a vegan diet. Have you tried any of the vegan Quorn range yet?

  1. I can take or leave meat subs generally, but my chap likes them from time to time. We tried the spicy burgers and I thought they were quite nice - they're certainly spicy!

We went to a family bbq the other week and my eldest brother brought some veggie burgers (the peri peri ones from Iceland) and said "I like a veggie burger from time to time", if that's not change in the air, I don't know what is!

    1. Yeah, mine is more of a fan of meat and cheese subs than I am but I am getting more of a taste for them. I never go in Iceland but we do have one in walking distance. I didn't know they did burgers, I will have to check it out. That's great about your brother.

  2. I didn't know Quorn made soups until I read about the recall! When I was a vegetarian, I like Quorn products the best. I've heard they're coming out with more vegan products, but I haven't seen any yet. I would definitely try both soups if I see them!
I love making homemade soup too!!

    1. They are definitely worth a try. I don't know how much they retail at full price but I was really happy with them for what I paid and surprised how generous they were with the Quorn pieces.

  3. I tried the Thai one, it made 4 bowls,as a quick soup and a sandwich lunch. Luckily ours was also the vegan version - also from Heron. We have had the fillets in a garlic and cream sauce with wilted spinach, the last of the green beans from Sebs school project brand talk, and Charlotte potatoes. It was lovely. Have tried the spicy burgers, pieces, fillets, and am waiting for the breaded fillets to come out. Not had my wicked way with any Gary yet, but I am sure someone will Kiev the fillets soon. Love from Leicester!

    2. Good to hear from you Tams. Love the sound of those fillets. We've just had them in a tomato sauce with spaghetti so far. Haha, we've not tracked down any Gary yet. I think the nearest place stocking it is the Sainsburys on Regent Road in Salford so a bit too far!

  4. So far I've only tried the Quorn pieces and they were just okay, I'd like to give the fillets a try though so I look forward to hearing what you do with them.

    1. Yeah, we've had the pieces and I can't actually remember for we did with them so I guess they weren't that memorable lol!

  5. We only have the nuggets and the schnitzel here in the vegan range. I have bought the nuggets, but haven't tried them yet. I am slightly suspicious of them because I heard that some people can get quite a gut ache from them?

    1. Oh no , that's not good. We've been fine with the vegan Quorn we've tried so hopefully will be ok for you.

  6. How awesome that companies are making more and more vegan friendly products! I think I might try one of these soups (perfect for lazy days) - I was a little dubious at first because I was like "a soup how original" however the fact they have quorn pieces in them is even better :) thanks for this review :)

  7. I remember when my sister was vegetarian she loved Quorn. This was like 10-15 years ago? I am not sure when Quorn came to the USA. So when I went vegan later on I was excited to quorn and was so sad to see eggs in the ingredients. I wish the vegan products were more common in the USA. I wanna try them!

    1. Hopefully you may get them soon. They've only just appeared here in the last few months. They sad for years that they couldn't replicate it without using egg white so it is great to advances in food technology that mean they now can!

  8. I also didn't know Quorn did vegan soups until I heard about the recall. I'm with you on generally making my own soups, but I'm glad that these soups exist and there are readymade options out there, especially if they're nice!
