Savoury Time!

There's been a lot of sweet treats on the blog in the last few posts so I thought today I'd feature some of the savoury things that we have been enjoying. Back in February we had a weekend in Nottingham. We were there to help a friend celebrate a special birthday and we also were also able to visit Sneinton vegan market which happens once a month. The market is brill but if you're ever planning a visit I would recommend getting there early. A lot of stalls had sold out by the time we arrived but we were so pleased that there was a couple of Vork pies left. These pies are amazing and win awards in pie competitions competing against meaty ones.

There's been great excitement in the UK as Quorn have launched vegan fish fingers. Here they are served on a traditional white bread butty with chips. I have to say I wasn't a fan. The breadcrumbs were good but the filling didn't do it for me, I found it a bit mushy. To be fair I never liked actual fish fingers that much so I think it's more of a personal preference that a fault with the product. Matt on the other hand loved them and several more boxes have found their way into the freezer.

A new product that I am keen on is Linda McCartney Scampi Bites. I loved scampi as a kid and these have translated very well into a vegan version. I've borrowed the picture here from the website as I forgot to take one but we had them with a marie-rose dipping sauce and salad. Yum, I can't wait to try these again.

I spotted these last week as a new product in the Co-Op on offer for £1. I've made pitta chips a few times at home recently and thought these red pepper ones sounded interesting. They were delicious and very moreish. Well done Co-Op for adding a great vegan snack to your range.

In other Pie related news, The Pie Parlour (our local bakery that specialises in vegan and gf) continues to turn out excellent pies. In recent weeks we've had pulled jackfruit and these creamy roast veg ones. We had these with a medley of veg and parnisp + potato mash

Here's my vat of gravy with Matt's secret gravy ingredient next to it of Henderson's Relish.

Any other gravy lovers out there?

  1. I've heard really good things about Linda McCartney's vegan offerings, but I've never seen it anywhere here.
If you ever see the gardein fishless filets I recommend them. Unfortunately they have gluten so no more for me but they're delicious!
I love gravy, but I am the worst gravy maker ever! There are a few vegan gravy packets that I buy that are soooooo much better than anything I could ever make!

    1. British gravy is made from granules in a jar that you add hot water too. The good news is that most of the different 'meat' flavoured ones are accidently vegan. I would love to try Gardein. About 10 years ago when I'd not been vegan long my local supermarket at the time stocked Gardein chicken nuggets which were very nice. They didn't stick them for long sadly and I've always wondered if it was a trial as it was in an area heavily populated by students and I never saw them anywhere else. The Linda Mc range has been for years more of a vegetarian range but they have started to introduce a lot more vegan stuff recently.

  2. Oooh, too bad we don't have Linda McCartney brand over here. My non-vegan husband is allergic to most fish and used to love scampi. I bet he would love those little guys. I always hated fish and also don't like any vegan seafood stuff, but I buy it for him sometimes. Ha ha.

    1. They are so good! Pre-vegan I was a big sea food fan. I don't miss it at all but it was a nice little treat and I do like also like the vegan prawns our local veggie Chinese does.

  3. I love gravy! So does my mum. I always put a little bit on, take a pretty photo of the food, then return to the gravy jug to drown everything. I like the brown gravy that we have here and the UK, the US creamy -style gravy is OK but not as satisfying.

    1. Haha, I like your style with the gravy Susan. It's funny that I lived in the US for a year when I was 21 and I don't remember the gravy at all. It is over half my lifetime ago so maybe I don't remember it but maybe I just wasn't that keen. Bisto all the way for me!

  4. I'm another gravy fan! Give me a jug of Bisto & I'm happy. I'm excited to hear that you enjoyed the scampi bites - I looked all over for them and the Linda M mock duck when I was last in the UK and couldn't find them anywhere.

  5. *raises hand* my name is Joey and I am a gravy addict.
I love the look of those pies - they're so pretty. And I'm with you all the way on the Quorn fish fingers, sadly. They just didn't rock my world. I prefer the Vbites ones by a country mile.

  6. Sorry to buck the trend, but I absolutely detest gravy - I love my food completely dry! I only allow myself a splash with Christmas dinner, and that's it. I'm a huge fan of pie though, and I'm still dreaming of trying the ones form Pie Parlour. It's a shame the Quorn fish fingers weren't great. I never tried scampi before I gave up meat, so I'd really like to try those Linda McCartney ones.
